Cacao, Almond & Chia Seed Slice

23/03/2014 By Caralee 26 Comments

Cacao & Chia Seed
This slice is full of super food ingredients & it is also super delicious! It is another raw slice that you can make in a jiffy for picnics, afternoon teas or for snacking on during the week ahead. It is so chocolatey that the kids will not guess that it is actually healthy for then!!

INGREDIENTS

1 cup of almonds
1 1/2 cup dates
2-3 tablespoons of cacao powder (or cocoa)
1 1/2 cup shredded coconut
2 tablespoons of chia seed
2 tablespoons of honey
1/2 teaspoon sea salt

DIRECTIONS

  1. In your food processor, blitz one cup of almonds until they are fine like almond meal
  2. Place the rest of the ingredients into the food processor
  3. Blitz until the mixture is dough like. This may take a bit of time depending on the power of your food processor. You also may need to stop the food processor several times & scrape down the sides
  4. Once the mixture is soft & dough like place press into a slice pan that has been lined with baking paper
  5. Place in the fridge for 1 hour before serving
  6. Serve & enjoy!

OH how yummy. Do these need to be refrigerated? and how long can you store them for?

Hi there. I keep mine in the fridge, but I do not think this is necessary. It lasts for ages, we eat ours quickly though.

Is it possible to make these without the dates? Or do you have a suggested replacement? 🙂

Hi Georgia 🙂 Thanks for stopping by. You could use raisins, prunes, figs or cranberries as a replacement. They would have a different flavour, but there would still taste really good and be the right texture.

Hi there, I made this as per your recipe – but it’s quite dry. I left it to set for longer than 1hr in thr frifridge and when I went to cut it, it mostly crumbled. What do you think may have happened? It tastes delicious btw!

Hi There Kellie. Thanks for stopping by. Maybe your dates were a bit dry or something. Add more coconut oil or water I would say as it should not be crumbly. That will help. Try again because it is worth the effort and will last in the fridge for ages. :)x

Mine went crumbly the time I rushed the nuts and didn’t process them long enough. Every other time it’s been perfect. Got to get that yummy, healthy nut oil out 🙂

Hi Ulina. You can always add a little coconut oil to help the mixture stick together. Sometimes natural ingredients like dates and nuts have different moisture levels compared to other times. I am pleased that you like the recipe 🙂 xx

Just making this now and mine seems to be a bit dry too. It’s more like a crumb than a dough. Will try adding oil. Very tasty though!

Hi Paula. Yes just add more oil. Because the recipe is made with nuts and dates the moisture in the natural ingredients does vary from batch to batch.

I soaked my dates in bowling water for a few minutes before hand, that worked beautifully!

Hi Tash. Yay! Go Northland! I love hearing from locals, it makes me so excited. My Aunty used to live in Dargaville when I was growing up so I spent heaps of time there. I am glad you are loving the recipes 🙂

This looks divine! However I want to omit the dates as I’m on a strict no sugar diet. Are the dates needed as a binding agent or would I be able to just leave them out altogether? Thanks 😊

Hi Lauren. Yes you will need to use the dates to bind the ingredients together. I hope you are able to find some lovely sugar free options.
