Last night my husband was loudly hinting that I should make him a chocolatey treat after dinner… as he does! I am always happy to oblige because then I can have a sneaky treat as well! This recipe is really quick to whip together and so doable without any planning.
Before Real Food Pledge, my ‘go to’ quick whip up dessertΒ was a self saucing chocolate pudding by Alison Holst, that I grew up making. It is such a goodie, but full of gluten, sugar and dairy, so not a great option. This brownie is made with sweet potato and I absolutely love the idea that you can make a sweet treat from a vegetable.
I think that this brownie is just as good as my favourite self saucing chocolate pud, if not better! If you are after chocolate, melt in your mouth yumminess then this recipe is for you!
- 200 grams raw sweet potato, peeled and grated
- ½ cup melted coconut oil
- ½ cup of honey or pure maple syrup
- 2 large eggs
- Β½ cup of raw cacao powder
- 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda
- 2 tablespoons of coconut flour
- 12 pecan nuts, optional garnish
- Preheat your oven to 180 degrees celsius.
- Grate the sweet potato or for a quick solution blitz in the food processor until it is finely chopped.
- In a large bowl mix together the sweet potato, oil, honey & eggs until combined.
- Add the cacao, coconut flour & bicarbonate of soda and combine all the ingredients.
- Line a small slice tin with baking paper & pour the batter into the tin.
- Top with the pecan nuts and place in the oven. Bake for 25 minutes or until the centre is firm to touch or a skewer inserted comes out clean.
- Cut into slices & eat it hot straight from the oven or let in cool & store for later.

Just made ‘The Best Every Chocolate Brownie’
Yum yum. Could eat it all at once, but better not.
Hi Alanda. Thanks for stopping by & leaving a comment. I must admit that I ate super sized slices when I first made it, so you are not alone in wanting to woof it down in one hit!! I am glad that you enjoyed it π
Love this recipe. So moist and delicious – and very hard to resist, but if you can, it’s even better after a few days. It’s our favourite Paleo sweet treat. Plus it’s very easy to make π
Hi Sheila. I agree, it is such a yummy treat!
Hi, I would love to make this for my boys (one is GF and DF).
My question is about the sweet potato π does it matter what type you use? We have three in NZ (typically called kumera here) orange, red and gold….all taste different!
Hi there Sara
Oh I miss NZ Kumera! They are the best. I used the golden one which is the main one we get here in Australia, but I think that any variety would work a treat. There is enough sweetness from the honey and really the sweet potato provides the bulk. My two boys love this recipe, they have no idea that it has a vegetable in it! Enjoy π
Thank you so much!
Let me know how you go Sara π
Just made it with golden kumera. Delicious! Now just hope my boys eat it all up so I don’t π
Hi Sara
Great news! Yes that is always a problem when you have treats lurking around, but at least it is healthy! Enjoy π
Can these be made egg free? They look delicious!
Hi Michele. Thanks for stopping by and your question. I think that they would be very crumbly without eggs in the recipe, the eggs are what keep the mixture together, there is no harm in giving it a try though. :)xx
Can’t wait to make this!
Hi Brooke π Thanks for stopping by. I hope that you enjoy it. xx
I used flax eggs instead of eggs and slightly undercooked the mixture, and it ended up as a delicious mudcake! So good!
That sounds great Tracie, what a great idea π
I made this for my mums birthday just for something different and we all loved it! She has made it many times since, we both have your book and are big fans of all your recipes.. Thanks caralee
Oh thanks Lisa! That is really lovely π
Hi,
I wanted to buy the ingredients for this tonight but know that I can only get hold of either gluten free plain flour, ground almonds or dessicated cocount; no coconut flour. Would any of these be appropriate subs for the coconut flour?
Thanks
Hi There. Yes you can use ground almonds or gluten free plain four but the quantities are not the same, you at least need to double or triple the amount that the recipe calls for coconut flour. Or you can make your coconut flour by blitzing in the food processor the dessicated coconut flour to a fine powder. π
Delicious!!!
Believe me, these are best cold – frozen is my favourite!!
Hi. Thanks for the suggestion I am going to try that. π
i have made this brownie so often as my 4children love it. I have been sugar & carb free sinc feburary under my nutritionist but now want to get my children into it..your recipes have been fantastic as I’m trying to get rid of the easy processed bars and other Crap we feed them. My kids are 8,9, 11,12 so are keen to try new things, and teach them about all the sugar there is in all this other food, and basically going back to make your own snack, . thank you for the great recipes . I have a group of us at mount maunganui trying your recipes and giving the thumbs up when it can replace that processed one..we haven’t come across any that don’t work so far.. Keep up the great recipes. Thanks Gill
Hi Gill. Thanks for your message, I am so glad that you are loving the recipes and even better that your kids are also trying them out. A big hello & hugs to you all at the Mount! xx
This is so good. My kids love it. I freeze it so we don’t eat it all at once. It still tastes delicious in kids lunch boxes frm frozen. Double batch works well too.
Thanks Gillian, its a great one for the kids and freezing it is a great tip π xx
Is this recipe the same as the previous one or has it been changed? It has been my favourite sweet potato brownie recipe that I’ve found so I just want to make sure if it is still the same one!
Hi Rachel. It is the same one but I updated the photo π
Holy moly! This brownie is so delicious!
Hi Sam. I love the saying Holy Moly and use it all the time too! I am glad that you love it, so delish!
Thanks for the recipe. Turned out yummy and chocolatey. Love healthier versions of old favourites.
Awesome Kat, I am pleased that you love it xx
My goodness … apologies – this is going to be long-winded!! So, due to an increasing dairy intolerance and a general desire to wean my children off their ever increasing desire for sugar, I decided to check out Paleo ad came across your website.
Dinner last night went really well … but the Friday ‘after school treat’ for the kids today was the true test.
I made these AMAZING brownies feeling a little skeptical … would my kids like them or would they instantly recognise them as ‘healthy’?
They ABSOLUTELY LOVED THEM (and so did I)!!! Delicious, moist, chocolatey and decadent. I will never make another version again!
Thank you so much for this great recipe to start me on my Paleo journey. I am truly looking forward to continuing if this is the results. Thank you, thank you thank you!!
Hi Pauline. Thank you for your message. There is a whole different world of food out there and you are going to love it! I am glad that you have found my website and that you are enjoying the recipes. It is great to hear. π xxx
What is 200gm measurement in cups please. This is not familiar in US recipes. Would love to try this recipe.
Thank you.
Hi There. It is approximately 1 cup of grated sweet potato. Enjoy the recipe π
Can I use oat Flour instead of Coconut Flour?
Hi there Lily. It is hard to substitute coconut flour because coconut flour is very absorbent and you need to used much less than other flours.
